Yesterday, April 30th, was the MEA Member Meeting. After months of hard work and preparation, the votes were tallied, the members gathered, and the new MEA Board of Directors members were announced. |
Results: Susitna West District We are sad to report that Henrik Wessel barely lost the election for the Susitna West District seat on the Matanuska Electric Association board. It was a very close race decided upon by a handful of votes to incumbent Bill Kendig after a dramatic increase in voter turnout for the district seat. Results: Susitna East District |
We reluctantly inform you that Daniel Baldwin has lost the election for the Susitna East District seat on the Matanuska Electric Association board to incumbent Maxwell Sumner. |
Silver Linings & Small Victories |
While we are disappointed by the results of this election, we are celebrating the victories that were made during this MEA Election Cycles. We heartily thank the SRC endorsed candidates, Henrik Wessel and Daniel Baldwin. These incredible, strong candidates both ran impressive races, which were shown in the close vote tallies. The close election drove home the importance of each and every vote in these elections. These decisions are made by such a close margin, and have important repercussions on our daily lives and in our future. A huge increase in the number of people voting really shines a light on the great work that our staff, volunteers, and candidates put into MEA Elections this year. While the tally did not go as we would have hoped, this is great news to see more members of our MEA community paying attention to the importance of the small, local elections that impact our lives and wallets everyday. Thank you for raising your voice! Additionally, a record number of volunteers assisted with SRC hosted MEA Election events this year. Thank you to the almost 80 individuals* who took hours out of their lives to passionately move the needle towards a better Mat-Su. We are blown away by the interest and support of a positive energy future, and a #nosudam watershed. Thank you, thank you, thank you! |
What's Next? |
What's next, you ask? Well, we brush ourselves off and keep moving forward! If you see Henrik, Daniel, or June (Our Energy Coordinator) out in the world, give them a thank you. Send them an email, and let them know that they did a great job and put in an admirable effort. Beyond that, we will continue putting the pressure on MEA to make smart, forward-thinking decisions for the MEA community... and start working on next year's election for the two At-Large seats. There are always losses, but the next victory, large or small, will be right around the corner. Thank you for your support of our work, your passion for the Susitna, and using your voice to make sure that the next generation can enjoy the lifestyle that makes the watershed a great place to live, play, and work. |
