Welcome Back to our Winter Speaker Series
Energy Efficiency & Your Home with Mark Masteller September 27, 2021 @ 6PM
Snow? In September? While everyone is scrambling to button up their yards in preparation for flurries, we are interested in discussing how to make our indoor environs ready for winter. Want to make your home more energy efficient in preparation of the cold months ahead? Join the SRC and Mark Masteller on Monday, September 27 at 6PM for a presentation on how to improve the energy efficiency of your cabin or home. Mark Masteller holds a Matanuska seat on the Board of the Matanuska Electric Association. He is an assistant professor focusing on Renewable Energy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Bristol Bay Campus, and previously worked as a Wildlife Biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game based out of Palmer. Mark is dedicated to developing ecologically sustainable communities.
Come prepared with questions about how to improve the energy efficiency of your home in preparation for the long winter ahead. This event will be held online through Zoom and via FacebookLive.
Ecological Micro-Hydro Power with Dave Brailey Wednesday, October 20, 2021 @ 6PM
Hydrologist Dave Brailey spent over a decade developing a micro-hydro power project in his backyard.
The Juniper Creek Hydroelectric project now powers over 300 homes on the Matanuska Electric Association (MEA) grid. In a changing world, small projects like this will become more and more important in a transition to ecologically responsible renewables and climate resilience.

Dave Brailey has worked as a hydrologist in Anchorage since 1986 and has been self-employed since 1996. Brailey conceived of the Juniper Creek Hydro while measuring creeks and springs on his Eagle River homestead. Due to the project’s steep terrain, Brailey used helicopters and heavy equipment for construction access, and retaining walls and gabion baskets for off-road vehicle access. Brailey is a lifelong river runner who enjoys skiing and river trips with family and friends. Brailey’s love of the outdoors has enhanced much of his life’s work in geology, hydrology, cabin building and the Juniper Creek hydroelectric system. The Susitna River Coalition is thrilled to see the development of small-scale hydropower and are excited to welcome Dave to talk about the development of his Juniper Creek Hydroelectric Project and the development of ecologically sound hydropower. Join us as we celebrate his exciting accomplishments and learn about the project.
Attend this virtual event via Zoom or FacebookLive. Read more about Brailey's project here and here.
